The Best (& Easiest) Halloween Costumes For Your Hair Type

Besides pumpkin spice lattes and new Netflix releases, there’s one other thing that makes fall our favorite season: Halloween. And for many of us, that means playing dress up. But if your group chat is already blowing up with outfit ideas and you feel a migraine coming on, we’ve found a simple solution to make finding a costume easier than turning off your iMessage notifications: Choose one based on your hair.

We know, we know — it sounds too easy to be real. But if you’re short on time and cash, transitioning from work to going out is a breeze when you’re already wearing Betty Cooper’s signature ponytail. And you’ll never have to explain who TF you’re portraying.

So, whether you’ve been dying to recreate Lara Jean’s ponytail, or Cheryl Blossom’s old Hollywood waves from Riverdale, styling your hair the best way you know how solves half the battle. Now, all you need is a little inspiration and a lot of hairspray. Click ahead for our favorite Halloween costume ideas.

Long Black Ponytail With Scrunchie: Lana From To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Another reason to love Lana from TATBILB? Her look is super easy to replicate for Halloween. To copy her style in this scene, tie your hair up into a high ponytail and top it off with a cute silk scrunchie (here are some of our favorites). Don’t forget to practice your winged liner like hers, too.

Box Braids: Princess Shuri From Marvel’s Black Panther

So, you’re wearing your box braids well into October but need help picking out a costume? You can incorporate your protective style in your look by channeling Princess Shuri. For this costume, tie your braids up into a ponytail Then, braid sections of the ponytail and wrap them into a high bun. Leave a piece out at the bottom to create an accent braid and you’re ready for Wakanda.

Curly Afro With Bangs: Angel From Pose

Your wash n’ go is a key part to transforming into Angel from Pose. On semi (or totally) dry hair, pick your strands out at the roots to add more volume. If you already have bangs, then you’re ahead of the game. If not, you can create a faux fringe by tucking some of your curls along your forehead and securing them with a pin.

Red Hair With Waves: Cheryl Blossom From Riverdale

To replicate Cheryl’s sexy waves, you’re gonna need a great curling iron or wand. We recommend a tool like the Beachwaver, which makes it easy to achieve waves even if you aren’t a total pro. Curl your entire head, then brush them out to create bouncy waves. Don’t forget your red lipstick, either.

Brunette Bob With Bangs: Ruth From Glow

There’s nothing like a blown-out bang and half a can of hairspray to turn your shaggy lob into an ‘80s throwback. Granted, you can also copy Ruth’s look before she gets in the ring, but there’s something enticing about all that volume you’ve gotta try once — at least for a night.

Long, Blond Braids: Beyonce In “Formation”

Use Michelle Obama, Kelly Rowland, and Blue Ivy as your inspiration for recreating Beyonce’s iconic look from Lemonade. Pair the plaited look with a black hat and you’ll instantly be the coolest person at the party.

Blond Bob: Margot Tenenbaum From The Royal Tenenbaums

If you have a bob, a flapper costume is kind of a no-brainer. But there are plenty of other bobbed beauties to choose from, like the classic MPDG Margot Tenenbaum from Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums. All you need is a blunt bob, a red barrette, copious amounts of black eyeliner, a striped shirt (Polo is best), and pink gloves with one finger missing.

Dark, Medium-Length Hair: Veronica From Heathers

Veronica’s final scene in the cult classic Heathers is the best — and easiest — costume. For starters, your hair can be a total mess (you did just save your entire high school from a handmade explosive crafted by Christian Slater, after all). Scrunch a dollop of mousse throughout to add texture, then flip it over and blow-dry upside down for a tousled look. And every time a frat star tries to approach you at the bar, and appears appalled by your rejection, don’t forget to tell him to lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up.

Pastel Blue Hair: Kai Anderson From American Horror Story: Cult

If Kai Anderson doesn’t terrify you, try being him from AHS for Halloween and see how everyone around you reacts. People will definitely be talking about the series’ newest season, so you’ll get lots of snaps for your commitment.

Platinum Bob With Bangs: Lorraine Broughton From Atomic Blonde

Just because you can’t be a spy by day, doesn’t mean you can’t pretend to be one by night. At the very least, you can humble brag all night about how much you resemble the broody star. Blow dry your bangs with a round brush, brushing your fringe to one side to make sure your smoky eye is on full display. Twist one-inch sections of your hair around a curling wand and brush out immediately for a soft finish.

Buzzcut: Eleven From Stranger Things

Screw trying to find a wig this year and embrace your fresh buzz by recreating Netflix’s youngest icon. Eleven might be known for her pink dress, Eggo waffles, and bloody nose, but it’s the peach fuzz chop that takes the look from Party City to the Upside Down.

Brunette Curls: Missandei From Game Of Thrones

While everyone else will try to copy Daenerys Targaryen’s platinum braids (good luck, ya’ll), you’ll be rocking your natural texture with ease — zero bobby pins required. For an added touch, twist your hair from ear to ear — creating a plaited crown — and decorate with gold hair accessories. Your look will be so convincing, you might meet your very own Grey Worm.

Brunette Waves: Solange From “A Seat At The Table” Album Cover

We’ll never get sick of this album cover — and neither will all of its copycats. So why not turn your everyday inspo into a look so recognizable, you’ll want to recreate it every day for the rest of the year? After all, not every costume has to be a caricature of your latest HBO binge.

Blond, Medium-Length Hair: Betty From Riverdale

The girl-next-door might be going dark this year, but as OG Archie Comics fans, we’ll be holding on for dear life to good girl Betty Cooper. Thankfully, her look is probably the easiest to copy. All you need is a hair elastic and strong-hold gel. But make sure that updo is tight — we doubt Betty would dare to be seen with a hair out of place.

Brunette Braids: Bonnie From Big Little Lies

We waited seven episodes before we could see the mothers of Monterey party like Audrey Hepburn, and while Madison’s nightshirt and mask combo was classic, it’s Bonnie’s Eliza Doolittle ( My Fair Lady) costume that had us stunned. All you need is a packet of bobby pins, a tiara, and maybe one yoga class for it to feel authentic.

Platinum, Long Hair: Khaleesi From Game of Thrones

Warning: You’re going to need some major length to make this costume come to life. However, while the look is complex, we found out that Khaleesi’s stunning braids, twists, and spilling waterfall waves are actually pretty easy to replicate yourself. Plus, every GoT fan (which is pretty much everyone) will know exactly who you are.
